Congratulations to Luis Prieto, a student from Miami Dade College - InterAmerican Campus, who was selected as the Florida College System Activities Association Publications Division Student of the Month for November. He was nominated by Professor Emily Sendin.
Here’s what we learned about Luis: “As part of the Miami Dade Honors College community, Luis took advantage of many opportunities InterAmerican Campus has offered him. In his first semester, he joined Urbana Literary and Arts Magazine as Spanish Editor. After a few months, he developed his English editing skills and accepted duties as English Editor as well. In the Spring of 2017, he was the recipient of the English Composition Honors Award. The climax of his Urbana Literary and Arts Magazine experience occurred at the annual Florida College System Press Association conference where Urbana won second place in the General Excellence Award, and Luis won an array of individual merits.
Luis has also been involved in other campus and community organizations. He led a Student Government project to help local animal shelters with donations and assistance and also facilitated a partnership between SGA and International Solidarity for Human Rights to introduce the concept “Class in a Box,” which promotes human rights education, learning, and knowledge as a lifestyle to alleviate violence and endorse inclusion inside the College but also extending to Miami Dade College feeder schools and nearby elementary schools. He also traveled to Nicaragua last summer to support the educational program “Tengo un Sueño,” where he served as a mentor to twenty-seven teenagers learning English as a second language and delivered a series of workshops regarding eating disorders, sexual assault, Internet addiction, and bullying.”
Congratulations to this outstanding student, and our thanks to Ms. Sendin for taking the time to nominate him for this recognition!
