Publications Student of the Month: March 2021

Publications Student of the Month: March 2021

Congratulations to another Publications Student of the Month for March… Stefani Davila from Miami Dade College! She was nominated by her advisor, Emily Sendin.

Here is why Emily thought Stefani deserved this award: “Stefani Davila is currently an editor, writer, layout designer, and photographer for Urbana Literary and Arts Magazine. In November, Stefani was part of the team that represented Urbana at the UNAIR Cultural Virtual Showcase in Indonesia showcasing the video about Day of the Dead (featuring her original work). Her work has already been published in volume 14 of our online magazine. She collaborated on the magazine's podcast on the episode "The Star Crossed Ballad Part 1" and for a cultural event for Hispanic Heritage Month, she wrote two Calaveras literarias - or literary skills. She is also a new member of the layout team. She has been a fast learner who contributes fresh and innovative ideas and designs to the group. Stefani is part of the magazine's founding blog team and contributes as editor and writer. Her first piece, "A Legacy of Life" delved into the organization founded to honor her brother who passed away from cancer. She is currently working on her next piece about a “dreamer” and her collaborations with the student-led organization, United We Dream. Also, her beautiful photography is featured in our weekly blog.

In addition to her work in Urbana, Stefani is an engaged and committed member of our student body and her local and global communities. The pandemic has not held back her efforts to serve those in need. Stefani is a volunteer at the Fundación Jóvenes el Cáncer in Ecuador; during the past three months, she has collaborated in the leadership and grief management virtual workshops for cancer patients. Recently, in Ecuador, Stefani helped deliver food and first-aid items to low-income families during their Hope Brigade. She is also the founder of Meraki, an organization dedicated to community service, which managed to collect more than 100 items of clothing to donate to Lotus house Women's Shelter. Currently, Stefani is a volunteer in the largest immigrant youth organization, United We Dream. Stefani was recently selected to serve as vice president of leadership for our campus's honors society, Phi Theta Kappa. Urbana Literary & Arts magazine is fortunate to have this committed and versatile student as a member of our staff.”

Congratulations again to Stefani and thank you, Ms. Sendin for nominating her for this award!
