Please help us congratulate the FCSAA Student Government Division Student of the Month for October... Carlos Ascencio of Miami Dade College! He was nominated by his advisor, Nicole Bryant.
Here is what Nicole shared with us about Carlos: "Exactly three weeks ago today (September 24, 2020), Carlos Ascencio joined the Homestead Campus Student Government Association of Miami Dade College as a Senator. Eager to have a higher level of involvement, Carlos was interviewed and appointed to the position of Government Relations Director on October 5, 2020. Though his current major is Computer Arts Animation, Carlos hopes to one day pursue a career in Civil Law. Driven by his passion for issues such as service and housing equality, Carlos also made it his personal mission to educate students on the importance of voting. Thus becoming the only student at the Homestead Campus to serve as a voter engagement strategist. Hosting recaps of the debates on his personal social media accounts, reaching out to other student organizations, and helping other students understand the voting process is just a small fraction of what he has done in the short time he has been with SGA.
In addition, Carlos has introduced “SGA’s Motivation Mondays” which is a virtual peer forum for students to decompress about the issues that they have faced or are facing as a result of the pandemic. While the forum is designed to be just a friendly ear for students who may not have someone else to talk to that understands the stressors that community college students are currently facing, it also presents an opportunity to connect students with pertinent resources offered by the campus through departments such as Single Stop, Learning Resources, ACCESS, the Student Dean’s Office, and the Shark Bites food pantry. Though Carlos has only been with us a short time, he has made every day count and truly embodies what it means to be a changemaker."
Thank you, Ms. Bryant, for your nomination of our SGA Student of the Month, Carlos Ascencio!
