Congratulations to Ms. Yisbell Alvaro, a student at Miami Dade College North Campus, who was selected as our Student Government Division Student of the Month for December. She was nominated by Mr. Sherman Gant.
Here’s what Mr. Gant shared with us about Yisbell: “As Student Government President, Yisbell has overseen two very successful events: the Temporary Protected Status Workshops and Student Government’s Masquerade Ball. Yisbell's leadership in planning and delegating for the Temporary Protected Status Workshops allowed more than 20 individuals to receive free consultation from immigration lawyers in south Florida during the event. Participants received immigration information to benefit those who risk deportation due to changes in legislation. Yisbell also secured a corporate sponsorship with BB&T bank, who provided refreshments and gift bags for all participants. This event was open to the public with many protected immigrants attending.
Yisbell also lead our Student Government's annual Masquerade Ball where we collected nonperishable food items to be donated to the campus food pantry. Because of Yisbell’s leadership, the executive board was able to collect 847 canned/nonperishable food items for the food pantry. MDC North Campus current sits in a food desert, and often our students do not have the resources to obtain a meal on a day-to-day basis. This event included sponsorships from Chipotle, Nothing Bundt Cakes, and Buena Vista Bakery. Her efforts directly aided our student body in their continued efforts to be successful students. Yisbell’s and the entire executive board’s ability to engage the community to give back through sponsorship has been nothing short of amazing!”
Congratulations to this outstanding student, and our thanks to Mr. Gant for taking the time to nominate her for this recognition.
