We are back with Students of the Month! Help us to congratulate our FCSAA Publications Division Student of the Month for October... Gabriela Vilas of Miami Dade College! She was nominated by her advisor, Emily Sendin.
Here is why Ms. Sendin nominated Gabriela for this award: "Urbana is fortunate to have Gabriela Vilas as its next social media manager. Although she is new to the team, she took on the challenge from the onset. She immediately emerged as one of Urbana’s most vocal and active members after joining us. She has developed content for all of our social media platforms, including animations, podcasts, story highlights, and awards. Thanks to her effort, Urbana is gaining more social media followers and audience engagement. Her most notable contributions to the team have been collaborating with the web design team in Urbana’s Emerging LatinX Artists In-between Boundaries Volume XIII, the successful virtual gallery for Hispanic Heritage Month. Through social media postings, she has demonstrated our contributors’ talents and passion for writing, photography, and artwork. She has also taken the lead in planning and brainstorming, along with other members, the virtual magazine launch for Volume XIII. Gabriela is one of those students who know when to lead and when to be a team player, and she skillfully navigates both. During our weekly meetings and our everyday group chat conversations, Gaby is always engaged and inspiring others to do the same. I am excited to see what else she has in store for us!
Being the Vice-President of Fellowship and Service of the Phi Theta Kappa Iota Chapter, Gabriela has been able to organize along with P.T.K.’s executive board, fundraiser opportunities with Fuddruckers, Chipotle, and Krispy Kreme, to collect funds for their Honors in Action project called W.H.E Against Covid-19. This is a collaboration with Save The Children Org. to help children who have been affected by the pandemic. Moreover, she has had the opportunity to participate in farm-shares, where she got the chance to help families affected by COVID-19 by distributing food and first essential items. During the summer, Gabriela had the opportunity to be a fellow under Luisa Santos’s District 9 successful political campaign. She was in charge of daily phone banking, contacting local business owners, and educating them about the importance of voting. Furthermore, thanks to her volunteerism activities with St. Jude Hospital and the League against Cancer, Gabriela has developed an enormous sympathy and respect towards families who suffered from this disease. Because of her empathetic nature, she has participated and volunteered in “La Caminata del Hospital Leon” and “Radiomaratón Promesa y Esperanza” to raise funds for people who cannot pay for their treatments to combat cancer. Gabriela is an exemplary leader in both her campus and the local community."
Congratulations to this incredible student, Gabriela Vilas, our Publications Student of the Month for October, and thank you to Emily Sendin for nominating her for this award. Keep up the great work, Gabriela!
