Congratulations to Candice Thompson, Daytona State College, one of our Publications Division Students of the Month! Candice was nominated by her advisor, Professor Elena Jarvis.
Here’s what Professor Jarvis shared with us about Candice: “Candice took the helm of the In Motion campus newspaper after serving only one semester as a staff writer. Although she had virtually no experience in journalism, she bravely went forth where she had never gone before, with humility, enthusiasm and a welcoming spirit toward all new potential staff members who came to our meetings. She also won the Outstanding Student Writing Award for the campus-wide competition hosted by the Department of Arts & Sciences. Her narrative on her battle with depression speaks volumes for her courage in all aspects of life, not least the newspaper. She was also recently awarded the Outstanding Student in Publications for 2016, for her sincere and well-conceived editorials for the newspaper, along with many other stories she has taken on for the newspaper.
Candice has taken a staff that was not cohesive and molded them into a team. She has somehow enforced deadlines without alienating any staffers and is always looking for ways to make the newspaper fun, from baking brownies for our weekly meeting to staging an Easter egg hunt. Although still learning the ropes, and making the mistakes that come along with that, Candice is able to take constructive criticism -- and sometimes unfair criticism from those unfamiliar with journalistic practices -- while keeping her million-dollar smile. If nothing else, she deserves to be Student of the Month based on her winning attitude alone.
Congratulations to this outstanding student, and our thanks to Professor Jarvis for nominating her!
